If your home uses both DOCSIS cable Internet and a MoCA network, installing a MoCA Point-of-Entry (POE) filter is essential—especially in high-split DOCSIS environments (85–204 MHz, 204–684 MHz, etc.). The POE filter prevents the DOCSIS downstream signal from interfering with MoCA frequencies, and also keeps MoCA signals from leaking outside the home.
This guide walks you through the correct setup and shows how to troubleshoot common issues.
Why You Need a MoCA POE Filter
A MoCA POE filter serves two critical purposes:
- Protects MoCA Performance: Ensures DOCSIS high-split downstream signals do not overlap or degrade the MoCA 2.5 band used by your HTEM5.
- Prevents Signal Leakage: Keeps MoCA signals confined inside the home for better speed and security.
If you install MoCA without this filter—especially on a high-split system—your MoCA network may experience disconnects, slow speeds, or may fail to establish a link entirely.
What You Need
- HTEM4 MoCA 2.5 Adapter
- A MoCA-rated POE filter
- A 2-way (or larger) MoCA-rated coax splitter
- Coax cables
- Ethernet cable
- Your existing DOCSIS cable modem or DOCSIS gateway

Step-by-Step Setup Instructions
1. Install the POE Filter at the Point of Entry
Locate where the coax from your Internet provider enters your home. This is usually:
- On an exterior wall box
- In a utility room
- Near your modem
Attach the POE filter directly to the incoming coax line, before it connects to any splitter.
2. Connect the Coax Splitter
Use a MoCA-rated splitter (5–1675 MHz or 5–2300 MHz). Lower-frequency splitters may block MoCA.
Connect:
- The input of the splitter to the POE filter
- One output to your DOCSIS modem
- One output to your HTEM5 MoCA adapter
3. Connect the HTEM4 MoCA Adapter
- Connect a coax cable from the splitter output to the Coax port on the HTEM5.
- Plug an Ethernet cable from the HTEM4 to your router, mesh node, or streaming device.
- Connect power to the HTEM4.
- Wait for the MoCA/Ethernet LEDs to turn green/amber to confirm MoCA link activity.
4. Power On Your DOCSIS Modem
Once the filter and splitter are in place, power on the cable modem. The DOCSIS high-split signal will now be isolated and will not interfere with your MoCA signal.
Troubleshooting Tips
No MoCA Link (LED is off or red)
- Ensure the POE filter is installed BEFORE the splitter.
- Check that the splitter is MoCA-compatible (5–1675 MHz or better).
- Verify that all coax connections are hand-tightened.
- Ensure your coax outlets are active and connected to the same splitter.
Slow MoCA Speeds or Unstable Connection
- Replace the splitter with a MoCA-rated model.
- Check for old cable amps or attenuators—these block MoCA frequencies.
- Ensure there are no additional POE filters inside the home (only one should be installed at the point of entry).
- Avoid daisy-chaining splitters; use a single centralized splitter if possible.
DOCSIS Modem Losing Sync After Installing MoCA
This usually means the filter is in the wrong place.
- ✅ Make sure the POE filter is installed before the splitter, not between the splitter and the modem.
- ❌ Never place the POE filter on the modem’s leg of the splitter.
If installed correctly, MoCA should not affect DOCSIS high-split performance at all.
